Visit some of New Zealand's leading studs and inspect their facilities and Bloodstock.

Your personal tour guide is Barry Lee a Bloodstock Consultant who has lived in Cambridge and worked in the industry for over 35 years. I am therefore able to give visitors an exciting, rewarding and informative experience of the thoroughbred industry around Cambridge and the Waikato.

Tour Duration is 21/2 hours at times to suit visitors. A shortened tour of 1 hour can be arranged.

We commence the tour from Cambridge township and proceed past the Cambridge Raceway where night Trotting and Greyhound racing is held. On past the Cambridge Jockey Club Training Center and equine swimming pool.Cambridge StudOver 700 horses work at this complex.

Trials are held monthly with over 200 horses competing.

Our first stop is the famous CAMBRIDGE STUD - 600 acres - Resident stallions are Zabeel, KEEPER, VIKING RULER and shuttle stallion Stravinsky and ONE COOL CAT. We inspect the facilities and see the final resting place of the champion stallion SIR TRISTRAM.

We then travel back through Cambridge passing Summit Saddlery and Geoff  Taylor's Jewellery Factory, each can be visited should you so desire.

Further on we cross the Karapiro Dam on the mighty Waikato River. This is the eighth Hydro-electric dam on the river downstream from Lake Taupo.

Next stop is TRELAWNEY STUD - 450 acres - Home of five Melbourne Cup winners, Trelawney was founded in 1940.

Onwards to THE OAKS STUD. - 350 acres -

Resident Stallion's TRADITIONALLY, SPARTACUS and BACHELOR DUKE

Our final visit is windsor park stud - 1200 acres incorporating Mapperly Stud in Matamata. Resident stallions are Starway, Kaapstad, Casual Lies, Volksraad, KING'S CHAPEL, THORN PARK and the shuttle stallions HIGH CHAPARRAL, Black minnaloushe and GOLAN.

 

There are other places of interest that could be visited by arrangement including the  Mystery Creek Polo Club.

Over the past 50 years the Waikato has had a tremendous influence on that great Australian race the Melbourne Cup. 20 winners having been bred in this area, and 12 of these in Cambridge.

There are 15 thoroughbred studs in this area, including Chequers, Highview, Curraghmore, Waikato, Brighthill, Rich Hill, Ashwell, Cheval, Java, Blue Gumand they stand over 50 stallions.
